Amazon WorkSpaces1 is a hosted Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution that allows organisations to provide virtual desktops to users without the complexity of traditional VDI infrastructure. Users need an internet connection and a WorkSpaces client2. Applications can be purchased from a marketplace, or packaged and uploaded3 where appropriate licenses are already available.
Key use cases
Organisations that would particularly benefit from VDI solutions include those who:
- have remote and/or roving workforces
- experience peaks and troughs in demand for desktop capability
- maintain large application estates and seek ways to simplify desktop management
- need to renew aging VDI solutions
Aside from selecting an appropriate WorkSpace tier, a successful deployment requires both sufficient bandwidth and low latency. An adaptive display protocol minimizes bandwidth requirements, which therefore varies based on the resolution and rate of screen change. Latency can make a desktop feel unresponsive, and can be minimised by identifying the closest WorkSpace enabled region4.
